BASIC Stamp Activity Kit with the addition of the AD592 Temperature Sensor. This kit is intended for Windows Portable Device Driver developers who wish to use the BASIC Stamp to demonstrate the microcontroller-based driver created in Creating a WPD Driver for a Microcontroller-based Sensor. With this kit, developers will be able to receive and display the sensor data from an AD592 temperature sensor as featured in the Microsoft whitepaper.

Follow the above link and you will find the following:

  • WPD driver whitepaper
  • WPD driver source code
  • Temperature-sensor firmware

The contents of the whitepaper include:

  • Creating Temperature Sensor Device
  • Configuring the Driver Development Environment
  • Getting Familiar with the WPD Driver Model
  • Installing the Sample Driver
  • Porting the WpdHelloWorldDriver Sample
  • Supporting I/O
  • Supporting the WPD Infrastructure
  • Testing and Debugging the Temperature Sensor Driver

The Microsoft WPD technology is designed to integrate microcontroller devices with your PC. The types of devices that connect to WPD include BASIC Stamp modules, remote sensors, cell phones, portable media players and digital cameras. WPD consists of a driver and an Application Programming Interface (API) that simplifies the creation of applications for these devices. The BASIC Stamp is the example hardware used to demonstrate a driver that receives serial data the most basic of all kinds of devices that may use WPD driver technology.

With this partnership, it is the goal of Microsoft and Parallax to demonstrate how a temperature sensor (i.e., the AD592) could be the subject of a WPD driver. The whitepaper’s example application obtains real-time temperature data from the BASIC Stamp and displays this data as a Windows sidebar gadget.

The main customer for this product is a Microsoft WPD developer who would like to demonstrate the driver development shown in the whitepaper. If your interest is getting started in microcontrollers (instead of driver development on a PC) then this kit is not for you. Instead, please see the BASIC Stamp Starter Kit web page.
